Visa Requirments

Entry Requirements and Application documents

EU and International students

  • Certificate of citizenship or appropriate proof of citizenship (ID card copy)/ Passport copy.
  • A document issued by a competent body certifying the applicant’s eligibility to continue his/her studies in higher educational institutions in the country in which he/she has completed his/her secondary education.
  • Diplomas of completed secondary level of education in English certified by an authorized institution / Transcript of records in English or Latvian, certified by an authorized institution of Higher Secondary School Diploma; Higher Secondary School Certificates School Certificate (ISC) / Intermediate Certificate / Higher Secondary Certificate / and all Senior School Certificate / Pre-university course awarded on completion of Standard 12 with a minimum of 60%; awarded by CBSE, CISE and Metro State Boards A Levels; International Baccalaureate with a minimum of 28 points.
  • English test should be at least level B2 or a certificate if previous education was received in English. It can be also IELTS or any internationally approved certificate.
  • TSI also provides English test and it costs additionally 50 EUR to 200 EUR registration fee. Deadline for this test usually is prior to their entrance test and skype interview (which is held as soon as the student provides all needed documents and depends on from which country he or she comes) and it takes together approximately 3h and consists of three parts – grammar, essay and speaking. Each part is tested different day and student chooses himself which day is the best for student. But please be aware that TSI English test is approved only in this Institute and does not apply to any other University/Institute. The whole process of English test if student is fast can take up to one week.

The following must be enclosed with the application:

  • A completed visa application form for (D-type Visa)
  • Evidence of the reason for temporary stay (e.g. marriage certificate, university enrolment confirmation or other proof based on purpose of intended stay).
  • Proof of secured housing/ Document for Hostel Accommodation Application, Rental Agreement or Notarial Certificate.
  • Should the applicant be under 18 years of age, required is a Notarial certified agreement, signed by both parents.
  • Evidence of health insurance.
  • Passport that will be valid for at least two more years.
  • Two passport photographs (35 x 45 mm in size) taken within the last three months.
  • Application form signed by the applicant.
  • Conviction Status Certificate con apostille issued by the Court of Justice.
  • Marriage/Family Status Certificate.
  • Proof of sufficient funds to support yourself.
  • Documents enclosed with the application must be either original or a certified copy, while foreign documents have to be translated into Latvian language and certified in line with special regulations.

Within 30 days of receiving the notification that their temporary stay has been granted, foreign students have to report their residence to the police administration/station of Latvia. Failing to do so within said time period, the temporary stay permission/work and residence permit become invalid.

  • Total expenses for the necessary things can range from 400 to 700 EUR per month (depending on individual needs).

Many university programmes and college programmes worldwide allow students to work on part-time basis preferably 20 hours over a week. But in no case you would be allowed to work more than 30/35 hours per week.

EU citizens may work in Latvia without work permit, Non-EU students with a Terminated Residence Permit (TRP) for studies are allowed to work 20 hours per week if it does not affect their studies.
